Oresteia Images:
Greek Tragedy through Necrobiology

About/Contact the Artist
Oresteia Images were inspired by the subject of Necrobiology as it relates to Greek Tragedy, combined with a study of direction and color. Necrobiology is the study of cell death. Apoptosis is a term used in Necrobiology to describe programmed cell death, where a cell is either sacrificed or predetermined to die at a certain time in its life. Necrosis describes cell "murder". These concepts were a starting point for the incorporation of Greek Tragedy into this piece. There are four stages in the cell cycle, four cardinal points of direction on a compass, four plays in the series we are taking inspiration from. Colors are key descriptors in the Oresteia. Iphigeneia wears robes of saffron, Agamemnon dons the god-like color purple. The Greed Tragedies were performed to honor the god Dionysus, god of wine, or artistic inspiration, or maniacal worship. The rich imagery and powerful surroundings of Plasy were an incredible setting for us to realize our Dionysian creation.
